Criteria for adopting a Standard Poodle without a fence

Carolina Poodle Rescue (CPR) prefers to adopt Standard Poodles to home that have fenced yards. However, under certain circumstances, homes that do not have fences may be eligible to adopt a Standard Poodle.

If you would like to adopt a Standard Poodle but do not have a fenced yard, please review the following to determine whether you meet the criteria for adopting one of these large dogs.

Criteria for adopting a Standard Poodle without a fence:

  • Previous dog ownership – preferably a standard, but at least some kind of dog. Not a first time dog owner!
  • Stellar vet report.
  • Outstanding references.
  • Able to show CPR that you have sufficient time to spend exercising the dog.
  • Able to provide CPR with a schedule of your current life, and denote exercise time for the new dog.
  • Able to show CPR that the new dog will not spend more than 4 hours in a stretch in a crate.
  • Able to show CPR that you have time for a minimum of two daily walks of at least 15 minutes each.
  • Able to verify access and/or membership to an off-leash dog park or some other fenced facility. (This can be a friend who will tell CPR that you and your new dog have an open invitation to their fenced-in yard.)
  • Able to schedule time for 15 minute (or longer) sessions, which mount up to a weekly total of two hours of off-leash running / playing time.
  • Commits to a basic obedience class within the first 6 months of ownership.
