Smitty was found as a stray and turned into a local animal shelter. He needs someone who will be very patient with him and let him warm up to them.  He needs an experienced owner who understands that Smitty will use his teeth to bite if he is startled or touched in a way he does not expect.  He needs an experienced, disciplined owner who will reshape his behavior in a positive way and understand that he will always need to be watched carefully especially around strangers.

Smitty is a very happy boy that loves attention, but it takes him a little bit to warm up. Smitty gets along well with other dogs, as long as they respect his space and his toys. He would be happier as someone's one and only, but could share a home with another fur sibling. He is not okay around cats.

Smitty sometimes resource guard his things as he wasn't used to having things of my own. He was found as a stray and living on the streets is scary. He had to fight for his food and anything else he wanted. Smitty greets his favorite caregivers with hugs and kisses and can't wait for them to pick him up. However we are cautious with him and know his quirks.  He has learned to walk on a leash and now loves to go for long walks. Around the farm he enjoys trails walks and time in the big fields to run and play. A home with a fence would be ideal so that he could run outside, but he'd also be happy with an active owner who is looking for a walking and hiking companion.

Smitty enjoys playing with toys, especially chasing a tennis ball. He will bring it back to you and drop it at your feet. He somewhat knows how to sit (sometimes he will do it, sometimes he won’t). He loves treats, but can sometimes be picky about eating. He likes being held and also enjoys belly rubs.

Smitty is a great boy who, if he is to be adopted again, will go to a home that will take time to get to know him and reshape his behavior.  He needs a home that understands his history and is willing to be patient with him. Smitty's ideal home is one where he will be an only dog, where the yard is fenced or the owners are active, and where there are absolutely no children. For the right home he will be your most loyal companion!  In the wrong home you will bring him back quickly.  It's happened numerous times to Smitty already so he will make the poodle farm his home until (or if) the perfect person comes in.

Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs.  If I have medical challenges I need even more! r having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support!  Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate.
