My Story

Date into Rescue: 2/17/2016

Reason for being in rescue: Blackjack was surrendered by his owners to a rural shelter in early 2017. He was adopted but returned in July 2020 due to behavioral challenges.

Special Needs: none noted

What kind of home would be best for me: Blackjack is a beautiful dog with some classic cocker spaniel behavioral challenges. He can be moody, snippy, and generally selective about who and what he likes. Blackjack needs a very experienced owner, preferably someone with experience with his breed. He must be the only dog. He will not be adopted to a home with children, or where children are frequent visitors.

What is my personality like: Handsome Blackjack has so much love to share. He loves people and loves to be petted. He tends to pick a person as his person, and that is who he attaches to. Blackjack tolerates the company of other dogs, but does not enjoy it. He is not a dog that wants to go to the dog park or for play dates. He wants you all to himself.

Blackjack does very well on a leash. He is fully crate trained. He will drink water from a bottle (which is very cute!). He does not know any basic commands, and likely isn't a dog that will enjoy this type of training. Blackjack is highly food motivated, almost to the point of inhaling his food. He will snatch food from your hand, and doesn't think twice if he snaps you trying to get food.

Blackjack is a moderately active dog. He's not looking for 10-mile hikes on the weekends. He really enjoys walking and will be happy on a leash walking a few times a day. However, given his dislike for other dogs, he is not a pet that will be happy living in a community-living setting. If you know the cocker spaniel breed and love them, Blackjack is a wonderful boy looking to be your companion!

How do I act when I first meet new people: Friendly and generally social

Tips and Tidbits: Blackjack's estimated birthday is 2/2/2014

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
