Weight: 55 lb
Height: 22 in
Estimated Birthdate: 7/25/2008
Fence Needed: No
Location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC
Adoption Fee:$1 I am special
Reason for being in rescue: Original owner had no time for, adopter returned due to aggression and resource guarding
Special Needs: Whitley has known issues with resource guarding. This is a manageable behavior. We have been successful in breaking her resource guarding habits of objects by "trading up" - meaning we distract her with something else to take her mind off of what she is guarding. Whitley was returned because she bit the owner and her adult son. The bite to the owner occurred when she tried to take away a piece of chicken from her. (It had bones in it, so the owner persisted, even though Whitley had growled and then showed teeth.) The bite to the son occurred when Whitley ran out an open door. He grabbed her by the hips to stop her, and she whirled around and bit him. (We do not know if this was a reflex reaction or intended bite.) Whitley came to us with a fear or mops and brooms. She's gotten better around these objects while in our care, but does have moments where she'd just rather not be around them.
What kind of home would be best for me: Whitley needs an adult only home. She loves and is great with men and women, but she is not good with children. They move too fast and make loud noises. Whitley needs a home with a dog savvy person, someone confident in their dog handling skills, because Ms. Whitley is going to push the envelope and see what she can and cannot get away with. Once she is made aware that that behavior is unacceptable and wasn't going to be tolerated, she behaves like the good dog we know she can be. She needs regular exercise to help burn off her typical standard poodle energy. She loves to run in a fenced yard then go for a walk - in that order, so she's better with her leash walking. While Whitley can be around dogs when she is outside and has lived with another dog previously, we are recommending that she be the only dog in her home to avoid any potential issues related to her resource guarding.
Whitley looks a bit messy now but wait til Sunday. Whitley is one of the dogs that will be groomed by professional groomers competing to bring out the best in their assigned rescue dog! I can't wait to post the after pictures. https://atlantapetfair.org/home-page/
What is my personality like: Whitley is very intelligent and loves interacting with people. She does great with positive reinforcement training and has learned a long list of commands. Whitley is also confident, inquisitive and active. She loves to take walks and "explore" the world. She loves to ride in the car, especially our director's big SUV which is set up in the back like a big, rolling dog bed. She can look out the window, sniff out the side windows or take a nap, waiting to see what this adventure is all about.
Whitley is now a senior, about to turn 12 years old. She's mellowed. She's less reactive, more loving. She spent time with a trainer in Hendersonville NC and responded beautifully to the resource guarding management techniques that Comora offered her. We think she is ready, finally, to find that one person who will let her be her. In the meantime, we want to recognize and celebrate Whitley's SOS sponsors - WESLEY J & JEN L, JACKIE O. Thanks to these generous donors, Whitley's behavior challenges have been able to be studied and worked on. Her life was never in danger thanks to you. Life is precious. All life. Celebrate it. And learn from those who don't fit in - that is our SOS mantra.
How do I act when I first meet new people: Curious, but not pushy.
Tips and Tidbits: Whitley's birthday is 7/25/2008. Whitley is HIGHLY food motivated. She will do nearly anything for food! Whitley is good with being groomed and stands nicely on the grooming table.
House trained: Whitley does not soil her run. We think she will house train easily. Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.
Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
