My Story

Date into Rescue: 09/05/20

Reason for being in rescue: Owner release/owner has passed away

Special Needs: Diego is perhaps the saddest case of a chronic unsolved flea allergy we have ever seen. Biting skin due to itching from fleas led to hair wrapped around the base of molars, causing extensive gum erosion, a root abscess, and ultimately a fractured jaw. On 9/9/20 Diego has a major dental and had 7 teeth extracted. He lost an additional 7 teeth in a dental on 9/22/20. Diego will require dentals every 6 months and must be on regular flea & tick preventative.

What kind of home would be best for me: Diego is a senior boy looking for a retirement home. His asks are simple - a warm bed, plenty of snuggles, your lap, and soft food. Diego's family must understand that he will require dentals every 6 months for the rest of his life and be financially prepared to handle these. Diego is good with other small dogs and cats. He would be great with children over 10 that will be gentle with this senior boy.

What is my personality like: Diego is a precious boy. For a dog that has endured so much neglect in his life, he has a heart of gold. Diego loves to snuggle in his bed and is a late sleeper. Most mornings he isn't ready to potty and eat breakfast until close to 10am. You don't have to worry about this boy waking you up with the sun! Diego loves to sunbathe. The warmer the better for his senior bones. He is a lap prince. If you are sitting down, Diego believes your lap is where he is supposed to be.

At 15 years young, Diego isn't looking for mile-long walks. A quick stroll to use the potty is all this boy needs. He would love being pushed in a stroller on warm days. Diego eats soft food. His poor mouth and teeth were a mess when he arrived and, 2 dentals later, he doesn't have many teeth to speak of.

Diego's caregiver says her favorite thing about this handsome boy is how fast his tail wags. When he sees his human, his tail will wag 90 miles a minute! Diego just loves people and his whole body shows it. Diego is an amazing boy!

How do I act when I first meet new people:

Tips and Tidbits: Diego's estimated birthday is 09/07/2005

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
