My Story

Date into Rescue: 9/22/2020

Reason for being in rescue: owner surrender

Special Needs: Florence is a beautiful dog with an edge. She absolutely requires an experienced rescuer committed to positive reinforcement training. She will not be adopted to a home with children.

What kind of home would be best for me: Florence requires a home with a very experienced owner. If you have never had your own dog, or have never rescued a dog with behavioral challenges, please do not apply. Florence is not your girl. Florence is in a foster living happily with other dogs and cats. She absolutely cannot be around children. Florence has a lot of love to share with the experienced alpha that will set boundaries, reinforce them positively, and show her lots of positive affirmation.

What is my personality like: The stories Florence could tell! Florence was hit by a car as a young dog. Her owners couldn't afford medical care so they surrendered her to an animal shelter in Georgia. The leg was wrapped and "set" and Florence was adopted out. Thankfully, Florence was adopted by a very experienced owner who recognized that the leg needed attention or Florence would lose it. Off they went to a specialty hospital where Florence had surgery to repair her leg. She slowly healed and recovered. Today you would never know there was anything wrong.

After having her leg repaired, Florence developed a luxating patella in one of her rear legs. Back to the surgeon she went for another surgery and another success. Then in 2018 a CT Scan determined that Florence had a collapsing trachea. She was placed on opiod medicines, but they made no difference. So today Florence has a cough and her physical activity is limited.

In late 2018, Florence's owners started her on Bravecto under veterinary guidance. They only gave her 2 doses, but Florence's behavior changed completely. Whether the behavior shift was due to the preventative is unknown. Regardless, Florence went from being a very sweet and affectionate lap dog to a dog that can have aggressive behaviors.

Florence is as sweet a dog as you will meet 75% of the time. She loves to snuggle, greets you with kisses, and will play with toys happily. But Florence has a switch. You can watch her eyes gloss over and her demeanor change entirely. And when it changes, Florence will snap at you.

Florence needs boundaries. She is not a dog that can sleep in your bed or sit on the couch with you. Yes, she would love to. She would love nothing more. But when you allow her these luxuries, she takes advantage of them and behaves poorly.  When Florence has boundaries, her behavior is manageable. She has a very loving heart.

How do I act when I first meet new people: Friendly

Tips and Tidbits: Florence's birthday is 10/16/2012

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
