Meet An Adoptable Dog
Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat)
Weight: 10.5 lbs - Petey is underweight. He needs to gain 2-3 pounds
Height: 9 in
Estimated Birthdate: 9/21/2010
Fence Needed: No
Location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC
Reason for being in rescue: Surrendered by owners to local animal control
Special Needs: Petey Pickles was neutered and had a dental polishing on 11/27/20. He's up to date on all vaccines and heartworm negative. Petey has luxating patellas in both of his rear legs (grade 3 on his left knee and grade 2 on his right knee). He is on eye medicine which he absolutely hates (and will nip at you while putting them in if he can)!
What kind of home would be best for me: Petey Pickles is a picky, peculiar dog. He can be moody and grouchy and absolutely requires an experienced owner. Petey is selective about other dogs and absolutely hates cats. PETEY IS LOOKING FOR A MALE-ONLY HOME (NO CHILDREN) WITH EXPERIENCED OWNERS WHERE HE WILL BE THE ONLY PET.
What is my personality like: Oh Petey. We sure wonder what life must have been like before you were surrendered to the shelter. Petey arrived in rescue with long, matted hair that hadn't been groomed in some time. He was scared and in pain and angry at the world. Our first order of business was a haircut, and that alone did wonders for this boy's demeanor. It's amazing how much better (and nicer) you feel when you aren't walking around in pain all day.
Petey is moody. He can be quite grouchy, but once he adjusts to an environment and a person he is okay. Petey LOVES treats and will become your very best friend for a treat. If you have treats in your pocket he'll curl up in your lap and snuggle. And he's very gentle when taking treats from your hand. Clearly he understands that treats are rewards.
Petey has done well with short walks. Given his luxating patellas in the rear legs he is not a dog that can go on multi-mile walks every day. Slow and steady is the pace for this boy. Petey is crate trained. The crate is his safe place and he enjoys lounging in his bed inside his crate. He did great on his transport to the farm and really enjoyed the ride.
Petey is well loved by his caregivers at the rescue. But we also recognize that he is a special dog that is going to take just the right special owner. Petey needs a home environment that is quiet and relaxed. He needs an owner with lots of experience and patience to teach and show him that not all humans are mean. He needs to be the only pet and really wants a home that is all men.
How do I act when I first meet new people:
Tips and Tidbits: Petey's estimated birthday is 9/21/2010
House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.
Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
