My Story

Date into Rescue: 11/19/2020

Reason for being in rescue: Miguel and his siblings were seized by animal control. Carolina Poodle Rescue pulled him from the shelter supporting animal control.

Special Needs: Miguel is neutered and up to date on all vaccines. Miguel has heartworms and was treated on 2/24/2021. The protocol we use is two-fold. We do a pre-treat people where the dog takes doxycycline (an antibiotic) for at least 30 days. During this time the dog is also on regular heartworm prevention. The drug doxycycline weakens the adult heartworms. We then used a drug called diroban (a generic immiticide) to kill the adult heartworms. The dogs are given 2 injections of diroban 24 hours apart. They are then under strict rest protocols for 5 weeks - mostly cage rest with limited leash walks each day. They go in for a follow-up vet visit after their resting period. Our follow ups are scheduled for the first week of April. Our plan is for Miguel to be able to go his new home on or about 4/8/2021.

What kind of home would be best for me: Miguel is all chihuahua. He is small but mighty, bold but shy at heart, and full of personality. He is looking for an owner experienced with the breed and experienced with rescue. Miguel was raised in a hoarding situation. He's learned a lot about loving human interaction, basic manners, etc. while in rescue. His forever home will have the experience and patience to continue teaching him.

Miguel would be happy as the only dog or living with another dog. He would be fine with cats. Miguel has never lived with children and is not well suited for a home with children under 12. He'd love a more quiet environment with plenty of exercise and ideally a fenced yard for playing ball.

What is my personality like: Miguel is a whole lot of personality packed into a 10-pound body. His caregivers describe him as spunky with a strong conviction that he is a large dog. In other words, he is a classic chihuahua!

Miguel loves to play fetch. He loves to play with toys. He loves to play with other dogs with similar energy. And once he trusts you, he loves to sit on your lap and give you all the kisses. Miguel actually has a timid heart and can be fearful in new situations. Once he is confident he is all in. Miguel is good on a leash and clean in his crate. He gets along well with other dogs and cats.

Miguel arrived in rescue via a hoarding situation. He and his siblings were seized by animal control. He is accustomed to living in a pack and hasn't had a lot of social experiences. But his is resilient and loving and ready for his happily ever after!

How do I act when I first meet new people: Shy at first, but warms up

Tips and Tidbits: Miguel's estimated birthday is 11/13/2017. This is an estimate based on his overall health and condition. We do not have previous records on Miguel.

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
