My Story

Date into Rescue: 3/18/2021

Reason for being in rescue: Lucy's owner passed away and she landed at the shelter. Carolina Poodle Rescue pulled her from the shelter.

Special Needs: Lucy Spartan is spayed and up to date on all vaccines. Lucy has heartworms and was treated on 5/16/2021. The protocol we use is two-fold. We do a pre-treat people where the dog takes doxycycline (an antibiotic) for at least 30 days. During this time the dog is also on regular heartworm prevention. The drug doxycycline weakens the adult heartworms. We then used a drug called diroban (a generic immiticide) to kill the adult heartworms. The dogs are given 2 injections of diroban 24 hours apart. They are then under strict rest protocols for 5 weeks - mostly cage rest with limited leash walks each day. They go in for a follow-up vet visit after their resting period. Lucy has gone through her treatment and is now ready to go.  She will need a follow up heartworm test in October to insure the treatment was successful.  She will NOT YET test negative for heartworms.  Additional medical work will be at the expense of the adopter.

What kind of home would be best for me: Lucy is a happy, active girl. Her ideal home is with an active, adventurous family that wants a go-everywhere sort of girl. She can live with other dogs of any size or cats, but would be equally very happy as the only dog. Lucy is looking for a home where dogs sleep in the bed, travel for vacation and adventures and where there is plenty of cuddles.

What is my personality like: Lucy was clearly very, very loved by her previous own. A happier, more toy obsessed, people lover you will not meet. The smile on her face says it all! Lucy adores toys and treats them like her babies. Like a prized possession, she will carry them around all day long. She doesn't like to share them with other dogs, but will with a few pouts along the way. Lucy has never met a human she didn't like. If you have time, she is all yours.

Lucy is equal parts play and cuddle. She's eager to please and responds well to praise and treats. This princess is a cuddle on the couch, go with you on adventures, sleep in the bed kind of girl. She'd love to be part of your vacations. Lucy knows that she is more than just a dog - she is a family member!

Lucy has been in our care for a while and is going to need some help learning to live in a home again.  Please plan to re-housetrain her and to teach her not to get on the coffee table.  She is so excited to be with people that she gets a little too happy when she is in our living areas.  She will learn and she will calm. She needs you to be her gentle guide along the path back to happy house pet.

Please note that Lucy is a terrier mix. She does shed.

How do I act when I first meet new people: Friendly.

Tips and Tidbits: Lucy's estimated birthday is 2/17/2017.

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.

Thank you for considering CPR!
