My Story

Date into Rescue: 01/23/2022

Reason for being in rescue: Buddy landed at a shelter in rural VA when life changed for his family. Carolina Poodle Rescue pulled him from the shelter.

Special Needs: Buddy is up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative. We do not have documentation that Buddy has been neutered, but he has received a veterinary exam which confirms he is not a suspected double cryptorchoid. CPR does not do exploratory surgery. Buddy will be adopted on a spay/neuter addendum. Buddy tested positive for Ehrlichia at the vet on 01/28/2022. This is a bacterial disease that is spread by tick bites. Buddy is asymptomatic at this time. He is not on any medicine. Full details on a positive Ehrlichia test will be provided. Buddy has a grade 4/6 heart murmur. He is on vetmedin 1.35 2 times a day and Enalapril 2.5 2 times a day. Buddy will have a dental on 2/28/22. Buddy has had a dental and lost 2 teeth.

What kind of home would be best for me: Buddy is looking for a home with an experienced owner that knows and loves the shih tzu breed. He really wants to be the only dog. Buddy is not good with large dogs and can be selective about the small dogs he wants to play with. He is not suited for a home with cats. Buddy is full of energy and will make an awesome walking or hiking partner. We do not recommend him for a home with children under 12.

What is my personality like: Buddy arrived in rescue when his humans could no longer care for him. He has lived most of his life with another small dog in the home. Buddy is full of personality. True to his breed, he is funny and stubborn and bold. He is good with other dogs and enjoys play time. He likes toys and will happily toss soft toys around the room. Buddy does bark at and chase cats - he is simply too curious.

Please note that in Buddy's photos you will note that his feet are inflamed. Buddy arrived in rescue with enormous matts hanging all over his body. He had to be completely shaved down. His little body is healing from many months of poor care.

How do I act when I first meet new people: Friendly

Tips and Tidbits: The family member that surrendered Buddy stated he is 6ish years old. Based on his overall health and condition we suspect he is closer to 3.

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
