My Story

Date into Rescue: 3/21/2022

Reason for being in rescue: Rumba was surrendered to a NC shelter by her owners. Carolina Poodle Rescue pulled her from the shelter.

Special Needs: Rumba is spayed and up to date on all vaccines. Rumba has heartworms and was treated on 06/14/2022. The protocol we use is two-fold. We do a pre-treat people where the dog takes doxycycline (an antibiotic) for at least 30 days. During this time the dog is also on regular heartworm prevention. The drug doxycycline weakens the adult heartworms. We then used a drug called diroban (a generic immiticide) to kill the adult heartworms. The dogs are given 2 injections of diroban 24 hours apart. They are then under strict rest protocols for 5 weeks - mostly cage rest with limited leash walks each day. They go in for a follow-up vet visit after their resting period.

What kind of home would be best for me: Once Rumba knows you, she is an absolute sweetheart. She lives life on her terms and that includes plenty of time to warm up to new people and new environments. Rumba's ideal home is with an experienced owner that knows and loves her shih tzu breed. She would enjoy another low key companion dog, but it isn't a requirement. She can live with cats. Rumba is not suited for life with children. She needs a family that will allow her time and space to build trust and share her love.

What is my personality like: Rumba is the sweetest most rotten girl you will ever meet. She loves to be held and spoiled. Rumba loves to play with toys and gets the zoomies often! Rumba loves other dogs her size, if a dog tries to bully her, she is going to bully back. She is a strong girl who won't take any bullying. Rumba walks well on a leash and is good in her crate.

At first Rumba is timid and unsure, she needs you to give her space and allow her to come to you first. She doesn't want a stranger just immediately picking her up. It will scare her and she will scream bloody murder. If you persist she will have no choice but to snap at you.

Rumba is a great girl who's had a lot of change. She needs an experienced, patient environment where she can blossom into the best version of herself!

How do I act when I first meet new people: Timid and shy

Tips and Tidbits: Rumba is estimated at 4.5 years old. We celebrate her birthday as 1/26/2018.

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
