My Story

Date into Rescue: 4/16/2022

Reason for being in rescue: stray

Special Needs: Darci is spayed and up to date on all vaccines. Darci has heartworms and was treated on 10/05/2022. The protocol we use is two-fold. We do a pre-treat people where the dog takes doxycycline (an antibiotic) for at least 30 days. During this time the dog is also on regular heartworm prevention. The drug doxycycline weakens the adult heartworms. We then used a drug called diroban (a generic immiticide) to kill the adult heartworms. The dogs are given 2 injections of diroban 24 hours apart. They are then under strict rest protocols for 5 weeks - mostly cage rest with limited leash walks each day. They go in for a follow-up vet visit after their resting period. Darci just finished treatment on 10/24/22. She is cleared for adoption and will start regular heartworm prevention in November. She will need to be retested for heartworms in March of 2023

What kind of home would be best for me: Darci is looking for a family that will treat her like a princess. She is a little spoiled, and doesn’t always like sharing her spotlight. She would prefer being the only dog in the home. Darci seems to do fine with cats while they are inside together, but if she sees one outside her prey drive kicks into high gear. We recommend that she does not have cats in the home on the off chance they both end up outside together. Darci does not require a fence in  her home, but you should know this short legged critter will climb any fence she can and jump over. Darci doesn’t let anything hold her back.

What is my personality like: Darci is one of a kind, and always full of surprises. Many people underestimate her based on her size, but she is one crafty gal. As mentioned above, she has been known to climb fences, but she is also a professional counter surfer. If there is something she wants on the counter she will turn into Stretch Armstrong in order to get it. Darci is stubborn, and does not give up on anything she wants without a fight. She thinks of herself as the queen bee, and everyone should answer to her. However, if you offer her a tasty treat she will pretty much do whatever you ask.

Again, don’t count Darci out based on her short little legs. This girl likes walks, and loves running. She is a lot faster than you would think. Anyone looking for a hiking partner, or just someone to stroll their neighborhood with, Darci is your girl. Darci loves adventures, and can’t wait for you to come take her on the biggest one yet!

How do I act when I first meet new people: Darci enjoys meeting new people, especially those that dote on her and give her treats.

Tips and Tidbits: Darci was found as a stray so we have no history on her. Based on her overall health and condition we have estimated her at 3.5 years old. We celebrate Darci's birthday as 04/16/2019.

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
