Biography
Maddock is not available for adoption. He is in foster with an experienced dog owner and her other animals. We have found that Maddock is too adjusted to her routine to move to another home. Maddock is bonded to his father, Augustus, who has been adopted by the foster mom. It is safe to say Maddock has found his forever home in ways.
Maddock is becoming a part of the sanctuary program to advocate for all the other timid breeder-release dogs who have a hard time adapting to life as a normal pet.
Maddock was 4 months old when he entered our rescue, we all expected a young happy puppy. We were shocked when we encountered a timid shut-down puppy who desperately avoided human contact. Maddock spent the first 4 months completely untouchable at the foster's house. He did however follow the other dogs in the home everywhere, he knew dogs and we knew that was the key to his heart.
The foster allowed Maddock time to decompress and just sat back and watched him try to model her dogs. After he was moderately comfortable at home, she got Maddock into a harness. Trying to touch him did set him back a few days but at least he finally had a harness and leash on. Foster began to try to walk Maddock around the house in very short increments. It took weeks but he began to accept that it was okay to be near at least his foster mom. Even then, there were close encounters, and Maddock can be easily spooked. Unfortunately, while unleashing Maddock one afternoon, he became spooked and began to frantically try to get away. Maddock and foster were in the laundry room, so the space was tight, In the process, he bit down on the foster's hand. It happens and we know Maddock will struggle for a long time in closed-in spaces.
At 8 months in the foster home, enters Augustus. Augustus is from the same breeder and the breeder finally decided to surrender him to our rescue. Maddock's foster mom has a weakness for goldens and she decided to take Augustus home as well. It was love at first sight; the boys were so excited to be reunited. Augustus is the complete opposite of Maddock; he is friendly and confident and wants nothing more than human contact. The funny thing is these two boys are father and son. Augustus brought out a more confident dog in Maddock. It was then the foster knew that A) Augustus was meant to be a part of the pack B) If Augustus stayed, Maddock had to stay.
Maddock loves his life with his foster mom, but she still can't touch him often. He avoids human contact but will follow behind his foster mom and give her tiny nibbles on her legs. He so desperately wants to trust fully but even after 2 years he is hesitant to trust even her. It may be a lifetime before he is ever a "normal dog".
As of right now, Maddock just wants to tell you all that it's worth the risk of adopting a shy and timid dog. Maddock sleeps in his mom's home almost every night. He leaves right before she wakes up but is so obvious he loves her in his own way. She sometimes feels an unusually large body sneak into the bed, she never looks but there is a huge inkling that Maddock is the culprit. The joy he has brought her over the months and months that it takes to make progress with him is so worth the wait. Some days are hard and you might feel like you are failing but trust that with time these shy dogs have the potential to be YOUR very best friend. Maddock will likely only ever accept his foster mom as his human but that is perfectly okay.
Sponsorship
Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard-to-place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs. If I have medical challenges, I need even more! The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest. Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you updated emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support!
