Biography
Lavina arrived on 11/20/23. She was one of several stops we made that day when our driver was in Amish country in Ohio, freeing breeder dogs from their lives in barns and kennels, making baby after baby for profit.
Breeder dogs in commercial breeding facilities rarely have any sort of confidence in or affection for humans. They are not loved on or affectionately touched by the humans for there is no reason to touch them that way. They are handled. The handling by the humans is not about love or affection. It's about providing needed maintenance on a "machine" designed to create a product for profit. The product is puppies. If you know anyone who purchases a puppy off one of the large internet sites such as puppy spot or Lancaster puppies, please know there is a mother like Lavina hiding in the shadows back at the farm. Fearful and feral.
In Lavina's previous world at a puppy producing facility, she had no socialization, no teaching, no training, and no affection from a human to her. Because her body was always treated as a machine, she has come to see humans as rough caregivers whose hands may not hurt, but they do not heal. They take her babies. Always too young.
We feel like Lavina is a good girl inside. She does not bite or snarl or growl. She runs and, if she is caught, she submits. She has no frame of reference or reason to let her guard down and relax and learn to like the company of humans. She is wary of everyone. Lavina is a work in progress. We are working on showing her that love and kindness. It is slow going. But thanks to our SOS supporters, we have time.
What Lavina does enjoy is the company of other dogs. She is part of our friendly feral colony of retired breeder mama dogs living the good life at the farm. With this group of dogs, she is relaxed and happy, playing and sunning herself, running in the yard and never missing a meal. For her, this is heaven. Here with her canine friends, she can just be herself.
At 8 years old, we know that making a break through with Lavina is becoming less and less of a possibility every day. We need your help to make sure we can continue to provide Lavina the life she wants. Cared for, fed, vetted and then allowed to run free in her own way with her own friends. As many pups as she probably supplied to the world, it's not too much to ask that she now be allowed to live in peace.
House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Sponsorship
Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs. If I have medical challenges I need even more! The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest. Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support! Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate. Questions? Email: cprsosdogs@carolinapoodlerescue.org
