My Story

Date into Rescue: 1/14/2024

Reason for being in rescue: breeder release

Special Needs: Sadie is spayed and up to date on vaccines. Sadie arrived in rescue with heartworms and was treated on 04/25/2024. The protocol we use is two-fold. We do a pre-treat people where the dog takes doxycycline (an antibiotic) for at least 30 days. During this time the dog is also on regular heartworm prevention. The drug doxycycline weakens the adult heartworms. We then used a drug called diroban (a generic immiticide) to kill the adult heartworms. The dogs are given 2 injections of diroban 24 hours apart. They are then under strict rest protocols for 5 weeks - mostly cage rest with limited leash walks each day. They go in for a follow-up vet visit after their resting period. Sadie is also Addisonian. She REQUIRES ongoing medication. Sadie is currently on a daily dose of Predisone. The average cost for her lifesaving medicine is $100/month.

What kind of home would be best for me: Sadie is a young adult dog whose early years were shaped by life in a breeding facility. She loves people and loves love and is happiest with other dogs that have a similar energy. Sadie is first and foremost looking for a home with an experienced owner that understands rehabilitating dogs and will continue to work with Sadie on her confidence in a home. Sadie would be happy with another dog with similar energy in her home, though she could thrive as an only dog. Finally, Sadie is Addisonian as noted. She needs a home that is committed to her ongoing medical care; this is non-negotiable.

What is my personality like: 'Sadie Mamas' has been a nickname for Sadie for a while now and it explains Sadie perfectly. She acts just like a mama dog, loving, caring, observant, but also ready to correct silly behaviors from unmannered 'children.' As a dog raised in a breeding facility, this is not a surprise. She's managing the way she knows. With similarly mannered dogs, Sadie is a delight. She is playful and happy and eager to engage. With dogs that have more demanding personalities, that are too much untamed energy or that want to dominate, Sadie reacts by showing them that she's boss.

Sadie spent a few months in a foster home after arriving in rescue. Her foster found that Sadie is a very loving girl who bonds hard and fast to her humans. On the positive, Sadie is going to give you her heart completely and unconditionally. For the less positive, this can lead to guarding behaviors if she feels her humans are threatened or that someone or something is threatening her relationship with her human. Some of this behavior could have been related to an unknown and untreated medical condition, which is now managed through medicine. Like humans, dogs can sometimes act differently when they don't feel good or something is wrong. Sadie needs a strong, experienced owner that understands how to redirect behaviors and establish boundaries using positive reinforcement.

Sadie is a well-mannered lady and prefers her companions the same. She wants nothing more than to give you all of the love in her heart, and trust us, there is a lot of love in there!

How do I act when I first meet new people: Sadie is a loving and sweet girl and meets new people with a resounding kindness. However, we have seen Sadie exhibit a mild amount of nervousness around men. She will still approach, sniff and greet men happily, she simply is cautious if abrupt movements are made. Sadie much prefers if pets are even under the chin rather than immediately trying to pet her top knot! Once her initial vibe check is finished all pets are free game. Sadie loves a good treat, and this is a phenomenal way to gain that smidge of trust she needs.

Tips and Tidbits: Sadie is estimated at 3.5 years old. We celebrate her birthday 1/14/2021.

House trained: Sadie's previous foster said she did not mess in the house. Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule if a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
