My Story
Reason for being in rescue: From Florence Animal Shelter. They could no longer care for him.
Special Needs: Walter is neutered, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative. Walter has heartworms and was treated on 02/21/2025. The protocol we use is two-fold. We do a pre-treat people where the dog takes doxycycline (an antibiotic) for at least 30 days. During this time the dog is also on regular heartworm prevention. The drug doxycycline weakens the adult heartworms. We then used a drug called diroban (a generic immiticide) to kill the adult heartworms. The dogs are given 2 injections of diroban 24 hours apart. They are then under strict rest protocols for 5 weeks - mostly cage rest with limited leash walks each day. They go in for a follow-up vet visit after their resting period. Walter has dry eye and is on cyclosporine eye oitment which is applied twice daily. He will need eye drops for life.
What kind of home would be best for me:
Walter is a versatile dog who would do well in a home with a single person, a couple, or a family. If you have children, Walter is best suited for a household with kids aged 10 and older who have grown up with dogs. He has a slight vision issue (which is treatable) that occasionally makes him sensitive to sudden movements. But don’t worry, he’s a super-sweet boy who just wants lots of love from his new family.
Walter is a follower and takes his cues from those around him, whether human or canine. He gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and his ideal home requires a
What is my personality like:
Say hello to Walter, a calm and sweet-tempered big boy who’s looking for a forever home where he can grow into a more confident dog with patience and love. Walter loves all dogs and enjoys playing with dogs of all sizes. He hasn’t been tested with cats, but based on his personality, we believe he would do just fine with a cat who is also comfortable with him.
Walter is leash trained but still needs guidance on basic commands like “come,” “down,” “sit,” and “stay.” This is another area where a confident dog in the home will be a great help in teaching him. Walter does have history eating blankets while in rescue. While we know he loves soft beds, this is something that must be very carefully monitored in his forever home.
Walter could live in an apartment but is generally better suited for a house. While a fence isn’t a must, a fenced yard would provide him with additional safety and the freedom to play. His adopters must be confident and patient, as Walter mirrors the energy of the people and dogs around him. If you are calm and secure, he will thrive.
If you’re looking for a sweet-tempered, affectionate dog who loves to play once he feels settled and is all about giving and receiving love, Walter is your boy! Adopting Walter will not only make his dreams come true but yours as well.
How do I act when I first meet new people:
When Walter meets new people, he won’t rush up to jump in your lap. Instead, he’s more relaxed and will be content with you approaching him slowly. After a few minutes of pets, he will settle in and enjoy your company—he’s a very calm boy!
Tips and Tidbits: Walter was born on or around 12/8/2018.
House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule if a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Potential Adopters
Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.
Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
