Why am I with a rescue group? Ollie Owen was surrendered by his owners due to behavioral issues. Ollie has come a LONG way since he joined Carolina Poodle Rescue in December 2018. We don’t really know what Ollie’s early months were like, but The dog that arrived at our rescue was timid, out of control, and showed aggression toward food and crates. He was selective toward other dogs and was just getting by in life. As he has grown and decompressed over the last few years, we have a completely different dog!

Today, Ollie is a happy, gregarious boy. Ollie is a happy, goofy boy. He plays hard with the other dogs in the field, he lets them know when he is tired and ready to stop. Ollie plays fetch with caregivers and even tosses the ball for himself on occasion. While he may lose the ball, or forget to bring it back, he still has the most fun playing ball. When Ollie is ready for attention, he will snake in and out between your legs and pet himself on you. He is curious and will playfully grab your hands just to say "hey! look at me!"  Ollie is easily redirected by a gentle verbal correction, a treat and a cue to sit.

Its important to note that Ollie does not always greet other new dogs appropriately, he needs slow introductions but once he is comfortable and the dog wants to play, its game on for Ollie. Ollie does have some food aggression with other dogs and must be fed in a crate, this behavior is correctable in a home.

Ollie gets so excited to meet someone new, he jumps up, but will stop after some gentle verbal correction and redirection to a positive action (sit/wait/chase ball).  He is very, very bright and would excel in something like nosework or rally obedience where eyesight is less important than intuition, intelligence and a good nose.

Ollie's left eye pupil does not constrict normally.  He has not been evaluated by an ophthamologist, but our general practitioner vet believes his vision is very impaired in that eye and there is most likely not a fix for that.  The other eye appears fine.  His periperal vision especially on the left is the problem.  

Ollie is the very best boy in our eyes and it is our dream to see this happy boy thrive in the right home with owners that are familiar with the breed and willing to invest time in training. Ollie is looking for a home that understands Ollie has lived in rescue most of his life and will need patience and training to adjust to a home. We recommend that Ollie initially be crated in the home for bedtime, as he was turned into rescue for possessive behavior over the former owners bed. Ollie is not suited for a home with children under 18 because his peripheral vision issues can result in him being startled if hi isn’t aware of someone coming.  We strongly recommend Ollie goes to a home with time and patience to work with Ollie and help him learn to be a member of a family. What Ollie really wants is someone to love him unconditionally and the time to build a bond.  Ollie has always been a delight at the rescue and he is by far a staff favorite. Ollie’s best home is one with other large dogs, he could live with a small dog; but big dogs make the best playmate for another big dog. Ollie is okay with confident, relaxed cats that don't do much.
