My Story

Date into Rescue: 8/7/2020

Reason for being in rescue: Gus was surrendered to a shelter in AR by his family. Carolina Poodle Rescue pulled him from the shelter.

Special Needs: Gus is obese. He is on a special diet with daily exercise to help reduce his weight. Since arriving in rescue he's lost 9 pounds. He is on a prescription W/D diet and needs to continue this. Gus also has bladder stones. These are breaking up with diet and weight loss.

What kind of home would be best for me: Gus is looking for a home with active retirees. He wants to be with people and does not enjoy being crated or being left alone. Gus will be happy with another dog or cat, or as the only. He just wants his people, a quiet life, and lots of lap time. Gus is a dog that does things on his terms. He can be nippy if you try to pick him up and he doesn't want to be held. If you give him time to come to you, he will spend his entire day in your lap. Given his propensity to nipping if he doesn't want to do something, we do not recommend Gus for a home with children or frequent visitors that are children.

What is my personality like: Gus is a happy-go-lucky man who LOVES food. You can tell from his photos that food is Gus's love language. He arrived in rescue at an obese 27 pounds and we're working hard to get some much needed weight off of him. So far he's down to 18 pounds!! As Gus has lost weight, some of his other medical issues have also improved.

We don't know a lot about Gus's life before being surrendered to a shelter in AR, but it must have been quiet. He is okay on a leash, but it is clear he hasn't spent much time walking on one. He does enjoy going for short strolls and will mark everything he can find along the way. Gus is great with other dogs and with cats. He really just wants to be where people are, frequently bumping into his caregivers when they stop walking because he is so close on their heels.

Gus doesn't like to be made things he doesn't want to do. He isn't aggressive, but will be grumpy. He prefers laying inside on a cool floor or outdoors on a shaded patio to any sort of activity you have in mind. Gus does not like crates and will tell you all about it. He will also guard his food in his crate if other dogs walk by.

Gus is looking for a Netflix and chill sort of family that will take him for daily walks.

How do I act when I first meet new people: Friendly

Tips and Tidbits: Gus's estimated birthday is 7/10/2012

House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.  A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.

Potential Adopters

Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.

Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.

Thank you for considering CPR!
