Biography

Baxter's original owners purchased him from a backyard breeder. COVID hit and Baxter did not get the training and socialization he needed. Baxter was reactive with humans would come over, he nipped the niece of the family once. The next nip was when the son answered the door, Baxter lunged at the friend in the doorway. Baxter was sent off to training after that. The next bite happened after Baxter was returned home. The owner took Baxter to a bus stop in an attempt to desensitize him to loud noises. When a neighbor reached down to pet him, he snapped at her.

The trainer who worked with Baxter did note that Baxter was a different dog during training. He was underconfident at home and confident during training. Baxter had minimal issues while with the trainer. The trainer noted that Baxter needed a strong owner who could read body language.

Baxter has been a delight at our facility, all of his caregivers adore him. He is full of life and brings a young dog's energy to the room. Baxter loves to play ball and would do it all day if you would let him! Baxter has been picky with his canine friends. He likes some playful dogs and prefers to be the most confident dog in the room. Baxter is also quite the couch potato, he loves to lounge around. Baxter is very much a people dog. He always aims to please and is almost always under his person's feet. Baxter is very well-mannered in the home and knows several commands.

Baxter is seeking out an experienced dog owner who uses positive reinforcement. He has been failed many times He just wants a quiet life with someone who loves to be home with their dog. We feel strongly that Baxter needs to stay a part of our sanctuary program until the right owner comes along for him. He is a wonderful dog and just needs someone to meet him where he is and understand him.

Sponsorship

Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick, or hard-to-place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog!  I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs.  If I have medical challenges I need even more!  The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest.  Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you updated emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support!  Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate.
