Biography
Bonner has lived his entire life before CPR in a small outside pen, rarely meeting new people and never experiencing new adventures, he will need a home experience in working with under-socialized dogs. Because of his past, he feels he always needs to protect his area and can be barrier-reactive with people, especially strangers. Bonner would prefer a home without kids or cats. He has asked that his new home be with only a few adults that he can see on a daily and build better habits from. Positive reinforcement, a calm-confident handler, who'll offer structure and boundaries is the most ideal environment for our buddy Bonner. He has a rough exterior, but once you get to his heart, he is a love mush.
While Bonner has been with us, we have worked on his leash skills and his basic cues. He will offer a sit and come, especially whenever food is involved. He will want ongoing training to boost his confidence, and every new positive experience will help him develop trust and loyalty. Because he's been in a small fenced-in area and his recall is unpredictable, he will need a fenced-in area of his own. Bonner has learned, even though we are trying to help reprogram his brain, that his area is his. We are working on his crate training. He happily goes in and sleeps like a pro and soundly throughout the night. But Bonner is not house-trained. He will urinate in and around his crate. A belly band in the home would be highly recommended. He also likes to chew on soft plushy things which is great for crate boredom but could be problematic with shoes.
Though Bonner has probably never met new dogs in his past life, he has made a few friends here but is still considered dog selective. It is ideal he goes to a home as an only dog or an owner that has experience in working with a dog selective dog. Bonner ideally could live with another docile dog; it would be good for him to model a nice-mannered dog. We will ensure that Bonner meets his new potential brother or sister in a good atmosphere to ensure the two dogs will get along. Bonner has made some amazing strides in terms of his trust in other animals, he continues to get better every day. We know that someone will enjoy watching Bonner blossom into a beautiful pet. You just have to take a chance on Bonner and meet him where he is. Take things slow and let everything be on his terms. Bonner has captured the hearts of all of his caregivers, we hope he can capture the hearts of a special individual who likes a challenge. What is my personality like? He can be more stand-offish to new people, after the initial meet, but once trust is earned, he becomes a love bug! His trust is easily earned with food and just time. Bonner's personality is constantly proving to caregivers that he is ready to learn to be a pet.
Sponsorship
Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs. If I have medical challenges I need even more! The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest. Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support! Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate. Questions? Email: cprsosdogs@carolinapoodlerescue.org
