Biography

Luca was originally found in a 12-foot construction ditch in western North Carolina. How Luca ended up there is a mystery, he is incredibly lucky! Luca entered our rescue in July of 2023, and we quickly found that Luca has some personality quirks.

Luca is a very headstrong dog. He does things his way. Luca throws temper tantrums if he does not feel things are going according to his plan. At first our headstrong boy had a very hard time accepting other dogs. Eventually with plenty of time and patience from one of our employees, we were able to get Luca acquainted with other large dogs. Luca is particular about his canine friends, preferring the company of low energy dogs who mind their own business. Luca has a small group of dogs that are a part of our sanctuary group that he now enjoys hanging out with. He typically avoids interacting with them but enjoys having their presence. Luca does have a very high prey drive; he does not do small dogs or cats. You may be thinking, "well that's easy to manage". You are correct, Luca's dog selectiveness is easy to manage.

What's not easy to manage is Luca's reactivity to humans. Luca is very picky. Once he decides he does not like someone, that's just that. Luca cannot go into public environments currently, he barks/lunges/growls and just overall acts like a maniac in public. It is what it is, and we're thankful for a safe sanctuary where he can live life on his terms with people that understand him and give him space. Even here in sanctuary, Luca is selective about his caregivers. Some caregivers say Luca is the best dog in the world and have never seen Luca's bad side while others cannot even interact with Luca as he just will not allow them near him.

Luca lives his very best life here with us at Dreamweaver Farms. He is often playing fetch, running laps around the yards, and sucking up every morsal of food he can find. Luca loves to go for car rides and view life from the comfort of the car, one of our caregivers adores him quirks and all and takes him out regularly. He loves toys of any kind and is seen entertaining himself with toys. Luca can be challenging for grooming but is starting to improve with more exposure to grooming. We don't know what Luca's life consisted of prior to rescue but we do know this boy is content here at the poodle farm and we are prepared to care for him for life.

When we said yes to Luca, we did not expect any behavioral issues. Like any dog adjusting to a new environment, Luca slowly showed us his true colors over the first few weeks he was with our rescue. We have found a way to live and work around Luca's personality. We love him even with his challenges. Our sanctuary program allows us to lovingly support this special boy!

Sponsorship

Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog!  I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs.  If I have medical challenges I need even more!  The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest.  Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support!  Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate.
