Biography
Rocky (the name his finder gave him) Jax (his original name) was found as a stray and brought to CPR by the Good Samaritan who got him out of the road. Once here, we scanned him for a chip and found he was microchipped. A call to the registered owner revealed a sad story.
Rocky had been loved by his young person, but the family does not believe in inside dogs. Therefore, Rocky was confined to the out of doors and this was just not ok with him. So, he would go looking for greener pastures and several times, he found them. Once, he found animal control instead and that is what got him neutered and microchipped, but his outside family got him back.
This time, when he left and went on walk about looking for inside love, he landed with us. We chatted several times with the young owner. She was out of town and set a date to pick him up about a week after we got him. We never saw her or heard from her again. We hope it's because she knew he was in a safe place.
Then we set about getting to know him. Oh, what a character this guy is!
Rocky Jax puts the S in special. Everybody here at the farm loves him. He’s full of energy, enthusiasm and zest for life.
One of our favorite things to do is watch Rocky play with his favorite toy - his tail. He will spin until you would think he would fall down from the motion. You'll want a Dramamine just watching him take off after that mischievous piece of black fluff that seems to taunt him by staying just out of reach. He has a love/hate relationship with that tail, and it entertains him, and us, for hours.
As for treats, Rocky has never met a piece of cheese he does not like. He especially loves cheese when it’s med time. So, even though he takes no meds, we have to make a tiny Rocky size cheese treat ball for Rocky twice per day when the other dogs are getting their medications, too. Rocky will not be denied the cheese treat. At least, if he is ever on medications, he will be easy to get to take them, we hope.
Rocky is a player. He loves dogs his size. He also loves belly rubs and attention, but once he gets the attention from you, sometimes the problems start. He expects that you give it to him and no other dog.
Rocky is also unusual in that he is always looking up and we mean physically, he is staring into the sky. Maybe he thinks his tail came from there? He’s never looking straight or down. He loves being outside. He’d stay outside for hours if we’d let him just looking up in the sky or looking at the birds.
He’s a fearless little dog, too. His size does not matter to him. He thinks he can take down a horse. We know because when the horses graze near his fence, he goes nuts. "Let me at 'em!" Rocky exclaims as he dashes around the yard.
Rocky is sweetest in the morning when he just gets up and when he gets really excited, he does this puppy bark. We think he’s a puppy at heart. He loves playing with puppies and he makes all the new puppies that we get in feel at home. We don’t think he only loves his tail. We think he enjoys other dogs' tails as well.
Why is Rocky Jax SOS....Well...along with that unique, somewhat OCD adorable tail chasing and along with his love of other dogs and of puppies, Rocky can sometimes put his little paw down and demand that things be done his way. When he does this, he will sharply correct you with his teeth if you don't behave. Sometimes he wants picked up. Sometimes not. Sometimes he wants pats. Sometimes not. We know the signs when Rocky is going into protection / obsession mode or when he just wants to be alone, and we work to head off those instances.
In the wrong hands, Rocky will snap, and he will bite. In the right hands, he's fabulous. But it has to be life on his terms. We know from working with dogs like Rocky and from listening to heartbroken owners releasing dogs to us that dogs like Rocky, adorable, cute but with an edge, are dangerous to have out in the world. The temptation to pick them up if they don't want to be picked up is just too great for most people to stand up to. Then the trouble starts.
Could Rocky be adopted - Yes. To someone with a quiet life with few visitors. To someone who would understand it's Rocky's world and would be considerate of his rules for living. To someone who would understand house training is a huge work in progress and may never come. To just the right someone, Rocky would thrive. In the meantime, he is thriving with us.
When you watch him spinning and leaping, chasing the tail and chasing the wind, it makes you think - for him, he is happy. For him, it’s Rocky Jax’s world we just live in it.
Sponsorship
Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs. If I have medical challenges I need even more! The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest. Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support!
