My Story
Reason for being in rescue: Four puppies were dropped off at our gate late at night in a plastic tote. The
owners
left a note apologizing and told us they could not take care of the puppies.
Special Needs: Bourbon is up to date on vaccines. He is neutered.
What kind of home would be best for me:
Bourbon is a sweet soul who simply didn’t have the easiest start to life. He is in desperate need of a second chance. Bourbon is looking for a family that will give him the big life. He wants adventure and socialization. Without these things Bourbon feels like he is missing out and that scares him. Bourbon wants to be included in everything you do, and when he is left out he can become a little jaded. Trust us, we know he is a DIVA! A little sensitive and maybe a little overreactive, but he's just a boy! :D
Bourbon requires a special home. He isn't looking for much, but he is looking for a few things. Bourbon is not suited for a home with children or children that visit frequently.
He needs adopters who will not just see his past but believe in his future and provide the structure and positive reinforcement he needs to succeed. He needs a home with humans who are active and can plan to consistently and slowly socialize him. He needs more exposure to realize the world isn’t such a scary place.
Bourbon would thrive most in a home with another large breed, confident dog who will appreciate and tolerate how playful he is. He gets along great with all dogs and all sizes; he just exists better with dogs who are equally active!
What is my personality like: Bourbon’s world has been small — too small … because of this he is defensive and uncertain of how to act like a normal dog around strangers. But underneath this game of charades and pretending to be guard dog, there is a misunderstood spirit who simply was just not given the chance as a young pup. Bourbon absolutely adores his daily caregivers and typically behaves very well for them. He enjoys frolicking in the water hose on sunny days and playing with his toys. He also has a profound love for his wagon - yes we said wagon! He frequently takes naps in it throughout the day, and we have all agreed that the wagon is his source of comfort (and entertainment) at this point!
Unfortunately, Bourbon
ll of the individuals who he reacted to he did not know and had never met before, other than through a fence. To him, they were strangers invading his home. All were minor bites that were not severe and did not need medical attention. With that being said, it is vital and required that Bourbon have committed, experienced owners who are willing to be patient with him and safely socialize him around strangers.
Bourbon is a goofy boy who loves all of the things typical dogs love. He walks well on a leash and does well with potty training! When Bourbon trusts you, he will constantly fill your world with endless laughs and entertainment. He is full of life and love and needs experienced owners who believe in him. Once Bourbon trusts and bonds with you, you’ll quickly realize this boy is full of quirks, silly antics and a heart that needs just the right person to unlock it!
How do I act when I first meet new people: Bourbon has stranger danger and is reactive and weary of strangers. He has a bite history with unfamiliar people that came into his area without meeting him one-on-one first. If you are planning to meet Bourbon, it is required that you come with a bag of treats on deck and plenty of positive affirmations! After he understands you’re not a threat (which does not take long) he will then beg you for constant attention. He loves to jump on people when he’s very excited and gets extremely hyper-active when he’s around people he loves and feels comfortable with. If you’re willing to give him a little time and patience, it is worth the reward. He is very friendly and social as long as you give him time to trust you!
Tips and Tidbits: Bourbon was dropped over our gate with no details. We have absolutely no history on him. Our vet estimates Bourbon's birthdate to be on or about 10/25/23. Bourbon is available for transport to New York!
House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule if a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Potential Adopters
Please note - we do not ship or transport our dogs. If you are interested in adopting a dog, take a look at the distance between the dog's location and your location and make sure you are able to make the trip.
Thank you for your interest in a dog who needs a new home. This description contains all that we currently know about this dog. We have no perfect dogs - but many of our dogs have proven to be perfect for a certain someone. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture. When screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, age, temperament, personality, etc. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families.
