Biography

Stokley arrived in rescue in May 2025. Life had changed for his humans - a newborn baby and other dogs in the home was too chaotic for Stokley and his humans. We were told that Stokley was getting lost in the shuffle. We quickly learned that Stokley simply needed a safe place. We are happy our sanctuary is his safe place.

In Stokley’s perfect world, everyone would be friends. We’d all love each other, spend our days playing outside, and never have to worry about fear or uncertainty. Stokley believes the world should be that simple — full of kindness, fun, and people who love him back just as much as he loves them. But real life hasn’t always matched that dream, and that’s been hard for him to understand.

You see, for most of Stokley’s early life, he didn’t get to experience what a normal, happy dog life should be. He was crated for long periods of time — often for most of the day — with little exposure to new people, places, or experiences. Without those chances to explore and learn that the world is safe, Stokley grew up uncertain about everything unfamiliar. He didn’t get to build confidence, so when faced with new situations now, his first reaction isn’t curiosity — it’s fear.

Meeting new people and visiting new places can feel overwhelming for him.

Stokley is a large, strong dog, but inside he’s a worried soul trying to make sense of the world. When he feels cornered, unsure, or threatened, his fear can show up as reactivity — he may lunge, bark, or charge at a new person. These behaviors come from insecurity, not aggression. He’s not trying to be dominant or difficult; he’s simply saying, “I’m scared. Please give me space.”

Building trust with Stokley is a process that requires patience and consistency. It doesn’t happen in a day or even a week — sometimes it takes several weeks before he starts to relax and feel truly comfortable with someone new. During that time, he needs slow introductions, predictability, and positive reinforcement. But once he realizes a person means him no harm, everything changes.

When Stokley lets his guard down, his true personality shines through — and it’s something special. Once he decides you’re a friend, you’re a friend for life. He greets you with big tail wags, happy barks, and his signature “bear hugs.” He’ll run full speed toward you, press himself against you for affection, and gently hold your hand in his mouth as if to say, “You’re mine.” With those he trusts, Stokley is pure joy — playful, loving, and endlessly loyal.

What makes Stokley’s story so inspiring is his ability to overcome. Time and time again, he’s shown that he can learn to trust and even thrive with the right approach. With regular, calm, structured introductions, his circle of trusted people grows. We’ve seen him transform from tense and unsure to loose, waggy, and affectionate. Each new bond he forms is a small victory — proof of his resilience and capacity for love.

Sponsorship

Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog!  I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs.  If I have medical challenges I need even more!  The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest.  Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support!  Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate.
