Biography
Duke (aka Pookie by his caregivers) was originally obtained by an owner after she saw someone giving away "free puppies" in a Walmart parking lot. He was very young and raised in a home with a young toddler. The original owner surrendered Duke to us in 2018, she stated that Duke and the toddler had never really gotten along. Duke loved his mom dearly, he would guard her from the other humans in the house, and he frequently nipped at the toddler.
Duke was an angel for us when he first came to us in 2018. He was adopted quickly by an older family who had experience with dogs. They had him for several years and unfortunately had to return him for unpredictable behavior in 2022. We have now seen a different side to Duke.
Duke is an intensely loyal and protective dog, with an overwhelming attachment to the things and people he loves most. In other words, Duke resource guards just about everything. His behavior stems from a deep fear of losing what matters most to him — whether it’s his favorite toy, a comfy bed, or his human companions. Even harmless interactions Duke perceives as potential threats and reacts by guarding fiercely. With that being said, he loves so hard that he will do anything to protect you. His actions, while deep rooted in love and his devotion to you, highlight his need for reassurance, boundaries and gentle guidance, which is why our Pookie is safest here at our Sanctuary! He thrives off of attention and is always eager to please his caregivers. Duke has an enormous heart, and he cannot help but to form deep bonds with his people and offer unwavering amounts of security and loyalty. His approach to safeguarding everything is rooted in love, not aggression. Duke’s balance of sweet and spice makes him all the more endearing, and he’s ALWAYS ready to offer love (and sense of safety!)
Duke is a sedation groom; we cannot groom him when he is awake. We have tried to groom Duke using light sedatives but unfortunately, Duke means business when it comes to a groom. He is almost always on his worst behavior when it's vet visit time.
Duke spends his days in our rescue, living life on his terms. He does as he wishes, and we have learned to work around him. Duke does give his entire heart to some caregivers, and they state that they can't believe his "other" side. Duke is all things special, and he teaches us all to live life the way we desire and don't worry about what others think!
Sponsorship
Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick, or hard-to-place dogs? It only takes a $ 20-a-month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs. If I have medical challenges, I need even more! The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest. Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you updated emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support! Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate. Questions? Email: cprsosdogs@carolinapoodlerescue.org
I LOVE MY Virtual Adopters! DUKE IS LOOKING FOR VIRTUAL ADOPTERS!
