Biography
Bourbon’s life began with a heartbreak no animal should ever endure: at just four months old, he and his brothers were tossed over a fence in a storage bin like trash. His siblings recovered quickly, blossoming into confident pups who were adopted one by one, but Bourbon stayed behind, the one who didn’t look like the others, the one who didn’t trust as easily, the one people kept passing over without ever knowing the gentle soul hiding behind his fear.
Raised in rescue with patience, kindness, and every bit of socialization possible, Bourbon grew into a dog who loves with a depth that feels almost human — but only once he decides you’re safe. Strangers scare him, and he will bite if he feels cornered or overwhelmed; he needs slow introductions, familiar faces beside him, and more than a few treats to believe someone new won’t hurt him the way the world once did. Some people he warms up to after several meetings, some take longer, and a rare few he simply cannot accept, no matter how hard he tries. But for those he chooses, Bourbon is fiercely loyal, endlessly affectionate, and heartbreakingly devoted.
Bourbon is wonderful with other dogs, gentle with cats, protective of even the tiniest 3lb pups, perfectly crate trained, never has accidents inside, and loves nothing more than running outside with the wind in his fur and the animals he considers his family by his side. He is a dog who will guard his home and his people with his whole heart, and he does not want unexpected visitors walking through his door. Bourbon isn’t the easy dog, the instantly friendly dog, or the dog who wins over every stranger — he is the dog who survived being thrown away and still found the courage to love, slowly and carefully, with a loyalty that lasts a lifetime.
Bourbon needs an experienced, patient adopter who understands that trust is earned inch by inch, not given freely, and that some of the most extraordinary dogs are the ones who make you work for their hearts. For the right person, Bourbon will be the most faithful companion you will ever know.
Sponsorship
Can’t have a dog of your own? Have a soft spot for old, sick or hard to place dogs? It only takes a $20 a month donation for me to be your virtual dog! I need at least 10 virtual adopters (sponsors) to help cover my monthly costs. If I have medical challenges I need even more! The caregivers at Carolina Poodle Rescue will do the rest. Just think, without ever having to leave your home, you can have your very own online dog that will send you update emails, make Facebook posts, and be eternally grateful for your support! Go to the donate link at the top of the page for instructions as to how to donate. Questions? Email: cprsosdogs@carolinapoodlerescue.org
